Structure of Gametes

Each sperm is a small cell of about 50 mu m length and 2.5 mu m diameter. It constits of a head. piece and the tail regions. The head consists of the nucleus and structure called the acrosome at the tip. The acrosome secretes lytic substance that break down the wall of the egg for fertilisation. The beating of the tail propels the sperms forward at the rate of 1 - 4 mm per minute.

                                        

Each egg or ovum is a spherical cell much bigger than the sperm. It mainly consists of a single nucleus and some reserve food made of lipid droplets.
